As a last-gasp effort to keep things solvent for a little while, I got a brand new TwonSoft box, had the old hard drive slammed into the machine, slurped off as much data as I could, and tried to get things more or less back to normal. (Emphasis on "more or less".)
How has my email been affected?
It hasn't been, I don't think that much seems to have been salvageable. You should be able to connect to the server and download mail normally. Your old username and password should still function.
How has my website been affected?
Everything was essentially blindly copied over from your site's directory on the old box to your site's directory on the new box. For static information HTML pages, images, sound files, PDFs, etc. everything should be right as rain. For scripts and the like, the files are still there, though whether they'll still operate as they did previously really depends on what the script notionally does. FrontPage access and interaction got completely hosed; I don't know how recoverable that will be.
How has scripting been affected?
PHP and Perl scripts should still run, though any server paths in which they are looking for files have almost certainly been changed and any database connections they might be trying make will certainly fail. ASP appears to no longer be functioning at all for whatever reason.
A lot of the server-wide PHP configuration settings have shifted during the server swap, most of them towards the more tightened-security end of the spectrum. Any really old or sloppy scripts you might be using that use such lenient assumptions (e.g., server-wide global variables) are unlikely to work anymore.
Is my database still there? Can I get data off of it?
The database information from the old server is on the server, but not in a format that's immediately accessible. Hooking it up to the new server is a purely manual process and will require me to issue a new database username and password combination to you. I can do so on request, of course. Please email me at the address above if you need this service performed.
Can I still FTP into my site to download my files off?
Probably not with your old password, no. As part of the server-transference process, the conversion script did some very funky things on the 'site administration' side of things. If you need FTP access, please email me at the address above and I'll send your new FTP username and password out to you.
Any other issues I ought to know about?
If you had any sort of custom "multiple different domains map to a single domain" setup in place, that is almost certainly lost. Contact me at the email above if you need such a setup put back into place for you.
Will you please hold my hand and get everything back up and running for me?
Nope. I was already going to start forcibly kicking people from the server this spring; this event just forces my hand. I'm simply not online nearly enough anymore to provide the sort of hands-on, top-notch hosting I would demand of myself... so I'm not going to do it anymore. If you're already committing yourself to the hassle and headache of getting an arsenal of databases and crazy scripts re-configured, you might as well do it on a webhost that'll do you right. (I'm moving my personal site over to pair.com hosting Real Soon Now myself.)
I'd feel more guilty about affairs, but I haven't collected a dime in webhosting fees in the last two-and-a-half years from the bulk of people, opting to host folks gratis instead. (So I guess there's a seed of truth to that "get what you pay for" axiom after all.)
If you need help getting existing files off the server, please do let me know. I'll be happy to help you get yourself on your merry way with a minimum of fuss and hassle. Just don't expect to set up camp and idle here in "well, I guess I've got to get off the server one of these days" more for any appreciable length of time, that's all.
I think that's about everything. If you need to get in touch, you know where to find me.
Thanks,
Antwon
